Description
Screen for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) with this quick blood test using a simple at-home finger-prick test.
What is the PCOS Hormone Screen?
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal condition that affects women of reproductive age. This test measures the levels of hormones that play a crucial role in regulating ovulation and menstrual cycles. Imbalances in these hormones can lead to symptoms such as irregular periods, infertility, acne, and excess hair growth. Monitoring these hormones can help diagnose PCOS, as well as identify any other underlying hormonal imbalances that may contribute to the symptoms.
What biomarkers are measured in this test?
- Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
- Luteinising Hormone (LH)
- Sex Hormone-binding Globulin (SHBG)
- Free Androgen Index (FAI)
- Testosterone
Who should take this test?
Women who experience symptoms associated with PCOS, such as irregular periods, infertility, acne, or excess hair growth, would find this test useful. Additionally women who have a family history of PCOS or have been diagnosed with insulin resistance, obesity, or type 2 diabetes may also benefit from this test.
Is there anything I need to know before taking this test?
Take this test on day 3 of your period and make a note of any supplements or hormonal medication that you are taking so that you can discuss this with your doctor. If you are unable to take the test on day 3 because of a restriction on when you can return the test, you can take it on day 2 or 4; or wait until the next month. You do not need to fast for this test.
You must be at least 18 years old to use our testing services.
How often should I take this test?
By monitoring hormone levels annually, individuals can gain a better understanding of their overall hormonal health. This information can help identify any changes over time, allowing for proactive steps to be taken to maintain healthy hormone levels.
What could results out of range (abnormal) mean?
Low levels of FSH and LH, high levels of testosterone, and a raised LH:FSH ratio can indicate imbalances associated with PCOS. Any abnormal results may suggest a hormonal imbalance that needs to be addressed. It is important to discuss the test results with a doctor to determine the best course of action which may include lifestyle changes, medication, or further testing.
What could results in range (normal) mean?
Normal levels of FSH, LH, testosterone, SHBG, and a LH to FSH ratio can indicate that there are no major hormonal imbalances. Good results can be motivating for making lifestyle changes to maintain healthy hormone levels. However it is important to remember that even with good test results, if there are any symptoms, it is necessary to speak to a doctor.
How can I improve my results?
Maintaining a healthy weight, engaging in regular physical activity, and following a balanced diet can help keep hormones in balance. Avoiding processed foods, sugar, and unhealthy fats can also positively impact hormone levels. It is important to discuss any lifestyle changes with a doctor to ensure that they are safe and appropriate for each individual's unique needs and medical history.
What other tests could I consider?
You may also wish to check their Thyroid Function and Cholesterol, HbA1c and Vitamin D levels.
