- Free Androgen Index (FAI) (Testosterone:SHBG ratio)
What is a PCOS test?
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a condition that affects a woman’s hormone levels.
This hormonal imbalance can cause symptoms such as irregular, or absent, periods, excessive hair growth (particularly on the face and abdomen), acne, loss of hair on the scalp, and fertility problems. Some women with cysts on their ovaries will have no symptoms at all, whilst others suffer with various symptoms, which may also cause low mood and depression.
Diagnosis of PCOS depends on a combination of tests and the history and examination undertaken by your doctor. The first set of tests for PCOS is this blood test for levels of: Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Luteinising Hormone (LH), Testosterone and Sex Hormone Binding Globulin
Testing requirements
Please consult your doctor if you are taking: taking prescribed biotin/nutritional supplements, Dopamine, L-dop/ergotamine derivatives, Nandrolone or hormonal treatments e.g. oral contraception.
Also consult with your doctor if you may have kidney problems, endocrinological (hormonal) conditions or may be pregnant.
When taking the test make a note of the day of your menstrual cycle if possible. This will help your doctor interpret the results.
For diagnostic purposes, the results should always be assessed in conjunction with your symptoms, past medical history, clinical examination and other investigations. This test alone cannot diagnose or exclude PCOS.
