Description
Protect your heart by knowing your cholesterol levels to make informed choices using a simple at-home finger-prick test.
What is the Cholesterol and Lipids test?
These markers in the blood can have a significant impact on your cardiovascular health. Maintaining healthy levels of these lipids can help lower your risk of heart disease. High levels of total cholesterol, LDL (bad cholesterol), and triglycerides, and low levels of HDL (good cholesterol) can increase the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack or stroke. It is important to monitor these markers regularly to help inform you, and your doctor, to make healthy choices.
What biomarkers are measured in this test?
- Triglycerides
- Cholesterol
- Non-HDL Cholesterol
- Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL)
- High Density Lipoprotein (HDL)
- Cholesterol:HDL Ratio
Who should take this test?
This test can be useful for individuals who have a family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, or those who smoke. Additionally it can be beneficial for those who want to proactively manage their health and lower their risk of developing cardiovascular diseases.
Is there anything I need to know before taking this test?
For this test, it is recommended to fast for 8 hours prior to the test to ensure accurate results. During this time you should avoid eating or drinking anything except for plain water. Before taking this test, discuss it with your doctor if you are taking any medication or have any medical problems.
You must be at least 18 years old to use our testing services.
How often should I take this test?
It is important to repeat this test at least annually as levels can change over time and monitoring them regularly can help you stay on top of your heart health. Knowing your lipid levels can also help your doctor assess your risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and make recommendations for lifestyle changes or medications if necessary.
What could results out of range (abnormal) mean?
If the results of this blood test show high levels of total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides, and low levels of HDL it may indicate an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. This can serve as a red flag and prompt a discussion with your doctor about lifestyle changes and possibly medication to help manage your lipid levels.
What could results in range (normal) mean?
If the results show healthy levels of these lipids, it can be reassuring that your heart health is on track. However it is important to continue making healthy lifestyle choices and to speak with your doctor if you experience any symptoms. Good results can also serve as motivation to continue with lifestyle changes to maintain healthy lipid levels.
How can I improve my results?
Improving your lipid levels can be achieved through lifestyle changes such as regular exercise, a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and quitting smoking. Maintaining a healthy weight and managing stress can also help. Your doctor can provide additional guidance and recommend specific changes to improve your lipid levels.
