What is a general wellness and energy test?
Our General Wellness and Energy Test covers a range of health markers for lipids, kidney function, thyroid function, key vitamins, and biochemistry, including inflammation. You should take this test if you want to monitor the impact of your lifestyle or you suspect you may be at risk of conditions including heart disease, kidney disease, vitamin deficiencies, or if you are experiencing symptoms related to stress, thyroid problems, or an unhealthy lifestyle.
Albumin is the main protein made by the liver, and Total Protein is a measure of all proteins in blood. C-reactive protein (CRP) is a key marker of inflammation that can be a sign of injury, infection, or chronic illnesses. Magnesium is essential for muscle contraction, nerve functioning, bone maintenance, and energy production, it is found in foods including green vegetables and nuts. Urea is the final breakdown product of proteins, it is filtered out and excreted in urine. Creatinine is a waste product from muscle breakdown that is also excreted in the urine. If your kidneys are damaged the levels of creatinine in the blood can increase.
Cholesterol comes from your diet and is produced in the liver. Cholesterol and other lipids are carried in the blood by lipoproteins. Low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol - is often called ‘bad’ cholesterol, too much LDL cholesterol can build up in blood vessel walls. Non-HDL Cholesterol is a measure of all “bad” cholesterol carriers including LDL. High density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol is often called ‘good’ cholesterol because it carries LDL cholesterol away from cells to be broken down in the liver. Triglycerides increase after eating and include ‘saturated’ and ‘unsaturated’ fats. They are mostly stored in fat (adipose) tissue, with some circulating in the blood to provide fuel for muscles. Cholesterol:HDL ratio is the proportion of HDL cholesterol compared to total cholesterol. A healthy ratio is maintained at a low level.
Cortisol is a hormone produced in the adrenal gland to prepare for the fight or flight reactions, it is involved in regulating a number of processes including weight by stimulating the breakdown of fat and protein and produces glucose in the liver. Cortisol levels follow circadian rhythms peaking in the morning around 8am and declining to its lowest levels in the evening.
Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) - is a hormone produced by the pituitary, a small gland located underneath the brain. TSH then prompts the thyroid gland to produce thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Free Thyroxine (T4) is the portion of T4 that is freely available for use by the body. The rest of the T4 is bound to proteins in the blood.
Vitamin D is vital for bone health and plays important roles in muscle function, immune system function, protection against chronic diseases and increased athletic performance. We get most of our vitamin D from exposure to sunlight, with a small amount absorbed through our diet. Vitamin B12 is important for the production of red blood cells, it cannot be produced by our body and is found naturally in animal products and B12 fortified foods.
